Four Sure Signs Your East County San Diego Home Has Roaches

June 15, 2021

Cockroaches can infest any home, even clean homes. They are brown, oval, flat insects that are nocturnal. There are five common species of cockroaches in San Diego: German cockroaches, brown-banded cockroaches, Oriental cockroaches, American cockroaches, and Turkestan cockroaches. Cockroaches vary from under ½ inch to almost two inches long.

Signs of Cockroaches

Because cockroaches are nocturnal, people often find signs of cockroaches before they see them. Cockroaches have a musty odor that is unpleasant. It is especially evident around cockroach hot spots such as under the sink, in the kitchen, and in the bathroom. In those same places, you will see black spots that look like pieces of pepper or ground coffee. Those are droppings from cockroaches living there. Cockroaches are somewhat oily. They also walk through dirty places such as sewers. Trails cockroaches use frequently have smear marks from the oil and whatever else the cockroach has stepped in. Finally, you will find shed skins, hatched eggs, and empty egg cases around the house. If you see any of these signs, you probably have cockroaches.

Cockroaches Pose A Danger To You And Your Family

Cockroaches pose a danger to you in two ways. As mentioned, cockroaches walk through sewers and other filthy areas. When they eat food in your house or get on food-preparation surfaces or plates, knives, and other tableware, they track that filth and contaminate your food. Cockroaches can transmit salmonellosis, typhoid fever, cholera, gastroenteritis, dysentery, listeriosis, giardia, E. coli infection, and other illnesses.
The other way cockroaches are a health risk Is spreading allergies and worsening asthma. Feces and shed skins and empty egg cases can break up into dust which you can breathe in. This dust can cause asthma and allergies. Studies have shown that children who lived in homes with a lot of cockroaches were twice as likely to have asthma than kids without high levels of cockroach allergens. Further, children with asthma who lived in places with lots of cockroach allergens had significantly more hospitalizations than kids who did not live in homes with lots of cockroach allergens.
